Official Google Blog Blocked from Baidu Search

By: Jillian C. York on 15 January 2010

Following Google's decision, published on the Official Google Blog, to stop filtering search results on Google.cn, it appears that the Great Firewall is blocking search results for "Google Blog."

Foreign visitors to Baidu are not exempt from the blocking: If a search contains blocked phrases, Baidu will lock the user out of the search engine for five minutes. A search for the term Google returns normal results, while a search for the URL of the Google blog brings about a lockout (warning: you will actually be barred from Baidu for five minutes).

The same scenario occurred when searching on QQ, Sogou, and Yahoo.cn.

IP blocking

I tested this using my connection and two different VPNs, and they indeed block your IP from accessing the search engine again, with no warning whatsoever, if you search for the Google blog URL.

Using VPN with a different IP address lets you access the search engine again, so I believe they are doing IP-based blocking.

Makes Sense to Me

The Chinese, with some justification, believe that their people are happier with programming standards closer to those the US followed during the 40's and 50's.

They see no benefit in the West accruing from the "freedom" we have to squander human resources on activities that add nothing to the society or to the strength of an individual.

In other words, when the US was at its greatest, we imposed the very same standards on our people (we called it decency) that the Chinese are imposing on theirs now.

We mock the Chinese for their "human rights" violations as they bury us economically, and academically.

In the meantime, we in the US imprison 5 times the number of people per capita than the Chinese do.

We is kidding who with respect to freedom?

Re: Official Google Blog Blocked from Baidu Search

I honestly think China is going way too far with their censorship of the internet. I mean, what harmless content could be in the Google Blog? The next thing you know, they'll be censoring the Sesame Street website... wait, they've probably already done that!

There are ways to get around these blocks but you have to have the proper devices and knowhow in order to get it done. The problem is that you have to keep jumping around because eventually you will get bumped. casino online
