Internet censorship and surveillance are growing global phenomena. ONI’s mission is to identify and document Internet filtering and surveillance, and to promote and inform wider public dialogs about such practices.

What's New at the OpenNet Initiative?

ONI is proud to announce the release of our latest reports on Asia and China at the 3rd annual meeting of ONI Asia in Penang, Malaysia, on June 17. ONI research reveals accelerating restrictions on Internet content as Asian governments shift to next generation controls. These new techniques go beyond blocking access to websites and are more informal and fluid, implemented at edges of the network, and are often backed up by increasingly restrictive and broadly interpreted laws.

The OpenNet Initiative is also proud to present a new survey of Internet filtering and surveillance in Iran, which details the most recent censorship measures and provides extensive background on the government's filtering regime.
