Syria tightens the screws on the Interwibble
IT SEEMS axis of evil Internet censorship member, Syria, is up to its old tricks again, this time blocking 160 websites which purportedly expressed dissident views.
The Syrian government has been cracking the whip of 'iron censorship' down on cyber freedoms since 2000, and the situation appears to be getting steadily worse.
The local watchdog, the Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression, noted that "160 sites run by Kurdish political parties, opposition groups, newspapers (particularly from Lebanon) human rights, Islamic and civil society organisations," had all been blocked.
Back in March, Syria began forcing Internet café users to sign in using their real names and by providing ID, so government lackeys could keep a beady eye on any potential trouble-making anti-regime boggers.
SCMFE president Mazen Darwish told AFP, "The campaign... is on the increase ". µ
