Filtering Map: Facebook

Recently, social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube have caught the attention of governments, especially when it comes to activists in authoritarian countries who use these sites for political campaigning and social activism.

Based on testing conducted in 2008-2009, the OpenNet Initiative has compiled data on the most frequently blocked social media sites around the world. The maps below serve as graphical representations of ONI's research results, depicting the states and regions where filtering of these social media sites — Facebook, Flickr, Orkut, Twitter, and YouTube — occurs.
