LA Times: Jordan scholar imprisoned for e-mails

A Jordanian scholar has been held in prison since May 2007 for violating Jordan's e-mail laws, the Los Angeles Times reported. The 62-year-old former parliamentarian "wrote e-mails decrying alleged corruption and human rights violations in Jordan to officials and newspapers," the story said.

A research conducted by ONI and released in May 2007 concluded that Jordan's laws restricting freedom of speech preserve an intimidating atmosphere that discourages free discourse on political and social issues.
