In Iran, 20-30% of internet users get around state censorship through the use of either VPNs or IP proxy software, but they are being increasingly hemmed in by more sophisticated measures being deployed by officials.

    A trial court in India Friday issued summons to the global executives of Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Yahoo and other websites for allegedly failing to censor objectionable content from their websites. Google and Facebook have moved the Delhi High Court to quash the ongoing criminal proceedings at the trial court, and that appeal will be heard Aug. 7.

    Newly leaked documents show that the United Nations is considering a new Internet tax targeting the largest Web content providers, including Google, Facebook, Apple, and Netflix, which could cripple their ability to reach users in developing nations. The European proposal, offered for debate in December, would impose heavy costs on popular Web sites and their network providers for the privilege of serving non-U.S. users.

    China has unveiled proposed changes to its internet law that seeks to restrict activity on microblogging platforms and other online forums. Part of the proposal involves changing the definition of "internet service providers" to include blogs, microblogs and online forums. The plan will also require users throughout the country to register with their real identities in order to post online.

    Google said Wednesday that it has added a feature to warn users whose accounts it believes are targets of "state-sponsored attacks," but the Internet giant did not cite a specific government. A message that says "Warning: We believe state-sponsored attackers may be trying to compromise your account or computer" will appear onscreen if users are targeted, Eric Grosse, a vice president for security engineering, wrote on a company blog.

    The India wing of international hacktivist group Anonymous is organizing protests in major Indian cities on Saturday against the blocking of file-hosting and file-sharing websites such as Dailymotion, Vimeo and The Pirate Bay by major internet service providers. These websites were blocked following an injunction issued by the Madras high court on March 29.
