Tor reports signs of deep packet inspection in Ethiopia

Online anonymity network Tor has reported signs that the Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation, the country's only ISP, has begun using deep packet inspection. Writes Runa on the Tor blog:

Reports show that Tor stopped working a week ago -- even with bridges configured. Websites such as https://gmail.com/, https://facebook.com/, https://twitter.com/, and even https://torproject.org/ continue to work. The graphs below show the effects of this deployment of censorship based on Deep Packet Inspection:

Ethiopia has a history of blocking access to blogs, news sites, and the websites of dissident political parties, among other types of content, but the government's approach to filtering historically has been somewhat irregular, with content similar to that on blocked sites available at other URLs. Tor is still gathering data; those with more information are urged to contact help@rt.torproject.org.
