Funding Institutions

The OpenNet Initiative would not exist were it not for the generous support of the following foundations and research centers:

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has awarded more than $3 million to the Berkman Center for Internet & Society and its partners to advance their collaborative study of state-sponsored Internet filtering worldwide through the OpenNet Initiative.

The OpenNet Initiative has been funded by a generous series of grants from the Open Society Institute (OSI).

The OpenNet Initiative's "Internet Censorship Map" is supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

The ONI-Asia project initiative is supported by a grant from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

Additional start-up funding was provided through grants to member institutions. ONI principal investigators Ronald Deibert (Citizen Lab, Toronto) and Rafal Rohozinski (Advanced Network Research Group, Cambridge) are funded through a grant from the Ford Foundation and supported by the Social Science Research Council programme on IT and Social Transformations.

ONI is actively seeking further funding to expand the scope and coverage of its research agenda. Several funding applications are currently under consideration.
