According to an AP report, access to Facebook in Vietnam has been intermittent over the past week, with many users fearing a government block.

Facebook has over 1 million users in Vietnam, a considerable amount in a country with 22 million Internet users total, or about 25% of the total population.

The social media site is among the most filtered sites in the world; Syria, Iran, China, and Saudi Arabia all currently block Facebook.

The ban in Vietnam was reported on Twitter as early as November 10:

What's so bad

I just don't understands the logic behind blocking the world's number social media site which is pretty happy gathering place between friends, family and colleagues.

FB blocking

I am a Canadian travelling through Southeast Asia with a friend, and we constantly use Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends back home. We were in Hanoi a some days ago and my friend accessed her FB that morning, and later that day I tried but to no avail. This story may not be vetted by CNN yet, but we are seeing with our own eyes that FB has, in fact, been banned from Vietnam.

indeed

I wasn't aware of this issue, which is really a problem.

Is Vietnam Blocking Facebook?

Yes, Indeed. In the beginning it was only a few service providers, but now it's spread to all I know of.. I had FB until last week, whilst friends have been off FB for a few months. There are a few work arounds but none have worked on my home pc yet but have been successful for others here. openDNS is recommended, but I haven't got it to work yet.

Spirit of Democraty

It is very wierd. Because what's wrong with those site, facebook is only the place that people can share with anyone about their feeling and share picture. How come they block facebook?

Truly a Sad

This is truly a sad day since I knew people in Vietnam, now the chance to find them on Facebook will be zero.

reply

yes, indeed, Facebook is

yes, indeed, Facebook is blocked. It’s been blocked in vietnam sice the 16th November. I have gotten around the restriction by using a custom DNS server (openDNS). To protest against the blockage, I have uploaded a proxy to my german server specifically for accessing Facebook.

I will be so happy to get back to germany, my home country, next year. Democraty is just less painful.
